Healing Properties of Colours

Colour is all around us yet often people forget how important it is in our daily lives and well being.

It is now a proven fact that colour within our environment affects our moods. Green is calming and soothing, which is why so many hospitals and waiting rooms are painted pale shades of green. Why do you think so many restaurant decors are red? Because it is the known “eat it up quick” colour. Many infants plastic bowls are red to encourage them to eat all of their dinner.

What colour did you choose to wear this morning? Maybe you need to wear a “business suit” for your profession, and mostly these come in black, grey or dark blue, but what colour did you choose to dress it with? The colour of your jewellery, scarf, tie, cufflinks or shirt. Not only do those few splashes of colour emphasise your personality, but they also add healing energy.

Many years ago I attended a writers’ conference and chose a particular lecture by a speaker I thought might be of interest. When he arrived he was wearing a dark blue suit and a white shirt with a thin blue stripe, both reflecting his intellectual abilities. My immediate impression was that he was going to be a somewhat dull and dry speaker. Then he leant back in his chair and his jacket fell open. Wow! He was wearing thick lime green braces! Suddenly my impression changed. Here was his personality. Here was his young, boyish, fun side. Once he started speaking he proved me right. He was not only full of useful information, but also fun, exciting and passionate about his subject. A terrific speaker.

So, look again. What did you choose to wear this morning?

Colour is also important in our homes. Forget the fashion magazines and this year’s trends, fill your home with the colours that turn you on. Sometimes that means buying second-hand to get the right shades, or making your own, or waiting until the trends change. Don’t go with this season’s colours, go with your heart. This doesn’t mean having to change your entire colour scheme but adding cushions, throws or flowers in your chosen shade.

Now what about the food on your plate? Yes, I did say the food on your plate. We mostly choose food because we imagine the taste on our palate and go “Yum, I’d like some of that.” Yet sometimes we choose our foods because it looks pretty, something about the colour appeals to our senses. The better our food looks as far colour, the better it tastes. Try it. Next time you make a meal pay attention to what colours you are setting out in front of yourself and your loved ones. Look at the quality of which colour sits next to which and wait for them to say, “That looks delicious.”
